I hate it when I get a lot of feels but I don’t why I have them nor do I know where they came from. Makes getting rid of them extremely difficult. Like, where is this need to love someone/everyone or express my feelings come from? WHERE?!
…if I say “from your heart”, will you kill me? ;)

It explains a lot.
Now this isn’t a post to excuse Loki’s shit behavior. No. Shitty behavior is still shitty behavior. This is a post sayin’ that Loki was screwed the moment he was taken from Jotunheim - even though he had a horrible life in Jotunheim as well - because even there he was ‘different.’ But either way, he was fucked.
Asgardian society is not free from the social ills we experience here on Earth. Comic books are not one-dimensional and they do indeed explore many of these social ills in our own society.
Whether it be comic!verse Loki who is treated as an “other” or movie!verse Loki who is raised to hate that which he unknowingly is, Loki’s villainy is born out of an internalized hate of his own identity. He tries his best to erase his true identity. He tries his best to adopt the customs and appearance of the Aesir but is simultaneously told and shown over and over again that it is impossible to become just. like. everyone. else.
It is because of this aspect that I can confidently say that I do not like how Odin handled parenting Loki. It is for this reason that I can say that I do not like him as a parental figure. People say he tried his best and maybe that is so but he still brought up a Jotun child in a realm where Jotuns were despised, a realm where he had the power to change that perception…but he didn’t.
Which is why I can only imagine Loki would have been better off if he had been brought up in an environment where he not only knew of his identity but also brought up in an environment where he was not taught to hate his identity. A stable environment. Unfortunately Loki didn’t have much of a chance because he was still different even among the Jotun and his father Laufey was ashamed of him, neglecting and abusing him for being small.
Now, I don’t care if he was given a lavish lifestyle in Asgard and I am frankly sick of people saying Loki was adopted into a privileged home and should have appreciated it. That is what having a privileged attitude is all about. We’ll reward you if you behave like this. We are the kinder and less brutish people that have come to save race x, y, or z from their ‘savage’ lives.
Internalized racism…
- Involves adopting that privileged attitude if you are put in a position where it is possible to do that. Loki was adopted by privileged individuals so in part he was given the same privileges - but not all. Though along with being adopted he also adopted the attitudes of the Asgardians. That Jotuns were brutal and savage; not at all complex or sophisticated like the Asgardians. Like he was.
- Involves empathizing with those privileged individuals who are oppressive to your own race.
- Excusing the shitty things privileged people do. Doing the same shitty things privileged people do.
- Hating your natural appearance and trying to change that. Mostly because you’ve been taught that you can’t be beautiful unless you adhere to the beauty standards of privileged individuals.
- Attacking and debasing your own race. Trying to distance yourself from your race in favor of becoming like another race.
Loki’s case is an extreme one that results in attempted genocide and him actually turning into a villain. Later on Loki no longer tries to be Asgardian nor Jotun, but rather tries to create a new identity for himself. But he is still conflicted and cannot fully erase his Jotun heritage nor his Asgardian upbringing.
However people who internalize racist attitudes to an extreme degree may become self-destructive, self-loathing and may even externalize that hate into other destructive behaviors.
This shit happens in society all the time though. It happens every day. Now I am a privileged individual race wise but I have seen internalized racism happen on many an occasion…even to people I call my friends. It is all over your history books but people in privileged positions like myself do not take much time to understand it…and understand the motivations behind those that have internalized racism. We just think ‘oh hey they’re fucked up for acting that way’ …well people just don’t wake up one day and decide to hate their own race. We teach them to.
I find it absurd that anyone would think that characters and situations that happen in movies, books and any other sources of media cannot be related to life and social issues. They may be placed in mythological, fantasy worlds but their actions and beliefs are very much indeed human. Authors purposely make their work reflect the human condition as well so people can relate. They are real problems and real issues that are portrayed among different people in a different place.
In no way is the story of Loki “just a story” thus we cannot analyze and critic it. I cannot stand it when people take that position because they don’t wish to face the dark and truthful reality that our societies are a bit fucked and that reflects in our media. To not be aware these problems whatever they are depicted, in real life or in media, is a goddamn privilege. To be able to ignore those issues is a privilege only those who do not experience these issues get.
For any privileged individual to say to a marginalized person that they may not talk about the issues without their society or media because it’s “not a big deal” or “it’s just a book/movie/song” is another form of oppression and is meant to only silence those people voices. And if you truly do not wish to talk about those problems, by all means, ignore the conversations but don’t you dare tell anyone that they cannot talk about them.
BOLDED FOR EMPHASIS
Yes Yes Yes.
Y E S.
- Thor never stopped loving and caring about his brother.
- Thor never stopped loving and caring about his brother.
- Thor never stopped loving and caring about his brother.
- Thor never stopped loving and caring about his brother.
Okay.
- Thor has taken the blow for Loki many a time.
- Thor has believed in Loki even knowing full well he could be lying.
- Thor has tried many times to give Loki the opportunity to change.
- Thor feels guilty for what Loki has become, he blames himself.
Most of all
- Thor never stopped calling him his brother.
As I’ve stated before it doesn’t matter who either of them is involved with sexually or romantically in canon, Thor and Loki are connected forever and there is love between them - if there wasn’t they’d be entirely indifferent to each other’s suffering.
Loki only thinks that Thor does not love him anymore and Loki has a warped perception about just about everything. Has Loki been slighted? Yes. However, I am sick of people saying that what Thor said - that basically Loki has indulged in imagined slights - is entirely incorrect and Thor is ignorant to all of Loki’s pain when he’s not and what he said is true to an extent. Loki has been slighted in the past but his memory of the past is full of only these slights against him no matter how small. He can no longer remember the love and affection he was given by anyone nor does he want to remember. Remembering it would only serve to guilt him for his horrible deeds. It’ll only serve to make him sentimental over the good times and it’ll force him to face the fact that he’s been pretty much fucking up any chance he has at redemption for himself. So if you see anything in Loki’s perspective it’s important to realize that Loki’s perception of the past is biased towards everything bad that has happened to him. It is his fuel for what he does.
Thor only hates what Loki does and even then he puts a lot of the blame for what Loki does on himself. Loving a person is about caring for them and Thor cares about his brother a lot. He feels guilty enough for not being there and not understanding what went wrong. He tries his best to stop Loki before he is too far gone and even when he is too far gone he does not give up on him. It’d be great if the entire fandom recognized this and stopped complaining that Thor is ignorant and/or indifferent to Loki’s problems or that he is not trying to understand.
Thor is trying to balance appeasing his father and Asgard, protecting Midgard which he has proclaimed it is his duty to protect, stopping his brother from causing destruction to any realm, and simultaneously trying to save his brother from his path of depravity. Do you know how hard that is? If Thor did not care nor love Loki any longer he would not have even tried to save his far-gone brother considering how much he already had on his plate.
- So stop calling Thor a ‘fucking idiot’ or ignorant or extremely arrogant.
The whole point to “Thor” was that he realized how brash and childish he was being and he changed that. I really hesitate to think Jane was the entire cause for that change because she did little to change his perspective. Loki had been dealing with Thor’s arrogance and brashness for a long long time and still had not managed to change Thor’s behavior. No, Thor could not simply change with words or actions. He needed to lose something first.
Instead Thor learned a lot by not having his powers to take advantage of. He had to earn it and he didn’t have to earn many things before. He is a prince after all. He was automatically given respect. The Midgardians were really indifferent to that fact and didn’t know how to react to Thor’s initial arrogance. The whole experience humbled him, not just Jane.
- Finally, stop treating Thor like everyone else who has slighted Loki.
Especially when Loki has slighted Thor on many an occasion yet Thor doesn’t let that consume him. Stop saying he stopped caring about Loki or loving him. He didn’t and I hope I’ve made that point clear here.
yes to everything about this post
THOR ISN’T STUPID
BRA-FUCKING-VO
I didn’t know thinking Thor was stupid was a thing.
Everyone needs to read this, seriously.
“And Loki, well. Loki outsmarts Thor a hell of a lot. But the majority of that stems from Thor’s continual willingness to trust and love his brother, and think the best of him.”
EXACTLY.
…and also read the article linked at the bottom about Loki and internalized racism.
important shit people. important to understanding Loki’s motivations in movie!verse and to an extent comic!verse as well.
